Sally Jan Smith was born and raised in Gainesville, Florida where she
graduated from the University of Florida with a degree in English
Literature. She did Masters work in Creative Writing and African
Studies.
Sally Jan moved to Palatka from Carmel California, where she had lived
for 15 years. She was an artistic entrepreneur- designing and
manufacturing a line of ladies clothing made exclusively from antique
and vintage fabrics. Her designs were featured in her shop in
Carmel, represented, and sold throughout the United States.
Sally Jan returned to North East Florida as she feel it is
“Home”. She works almost exclusively in oils and is considered an
impressionistic painter. She has been painting since she was a
girl, and is primarily self- taught. Her work has been featured
in several galleries in N.E. Florida.
Determined to capture the quiet emotion and subtle beauty of the
region, her focus and fascination is light and color and the changing
landscape within the light.
In another artistic endeavor, Sally Jan is currently working on a
children’s book, writing and illustrating the tale of two rabbits that
triumph over obstacles and hardships.
Sally Jan is also the art teacher at the Children’s Reading Center in
Palatka. Sally Jan recently had a gallery exhibit at the Larimer
Arts Center and currently has three pieces of her work there on display
in the Donor’s exhibit.
