The Arts Council of Greater Palatka and gallery chair Evelyn Snyder would like to invite you to our next gallery opening with Rudy Young. You are sure to be pleased when you see Rudy’s vibrant and impressive African American Folk Art. The opening reception will be on Friday August 14, 2009, from 5:30 to 7:30. Rudy will also be entertaining us with his music. So please join us for an evening of art, music and friends. Refreshments will be served, as always the event is free and open to the public. The show will be up August 10 through August 31.
Rudy Young graduated from Palatka Senior High in 1961, and followed an art career that has taken him through twenty years as newspaper illustrator; Florida Times Union ‘65-‘70, and the Gainesville Sun ‘71 - ‘85, until today when he stands as one of the best in computer illustration and painting. When technology for the printed page turned to computers in the early nineties, Rudy already had a vast background of work with quill pens and transparent inks to guide him in the development of his style. After losing several jobs searching for the right computer painting program, he settled on the granddaddy of all=2 0programs, Adobe Photoshop. It took a while to master the transfer of pen and ink theory to the computer but the result was astounding. All of Rudy’s paintings over the last decade have been done on a Wacom tablet; the art materializing on a Macintosh computer screen. He uses no scans, no Photoshop tricks, nothing but the brushes and color swatches available in the early Photoshop 4 program. The greatest benefit is that the resulting colors are as alive and vibrant as they are on the computer screen. Printed one at a time at a commercial printing service, Rudy’s art stands out as the best in this modern technology.
Like his music and writing, Rudy’s art represents the best in African-American folk art. Along with a live show at the Larimer, his two albums, Rudy Young - Boogie and Ballads, and Lightnin’ Harpo, Home Blues, will be available at the show. For more on Rudy visit http://rudyyoung.com/ |
